To better treat those who have served in the armed forces, some dental organizations recently donated their time to improve veterans' access to dental care.
The Dayton Daily News reports that approximately 140 veterans were treated to more than $100,000 in free oral care by ABC Dental in Huber Heights, Ohio for the second year. Some had not had a dentist appointment in several years, and many had severe tooth decay or bone loss. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that up to 12 percent of U.S. adults are affected by advanced gum disease while 25 percent of those aged 65 and older have lost all of their teeth.
Bob Muster, one of the co-owners of ABC Dental, told the newspaper that about 10 percent of all veterans lack dental coverage, which is why he helped to create the annual free program, called "Leave No Vets Behind."
According to the news provider, more than 24 volunteer dentists from ABC Dental and other surrounding clinics helped to clean, fill and remove patients teeth. To make the treatments possible, the money was donated to the program by various sponsors.
Although veterans and many other individuals may lack insurance, there are still affordable, low-cost ways in which these people can seek dental care treatment.
