Individuals could lack dental insurance for a number of reasons, whether they have lost their job or not having enough money to afford coverage. Although there are free care clinics that have been established for these types of people, patients are sometimes turned away due to a shortage of dental care professionals at these establishments.
KCRG-TC reports that the Iowa Mission of Mercy recently held a free dental clinic for one weekend in Eastern Iowa. However, the turnout was so overwhelming that thousands of residents could not be treated.
According to the news source, the weekend clinic serviced approximately 1,400 patients in two days, providing about $900,000 in dental care.
Meanwhile, there are only a few other places that offer similar treatments in the area year-round. Jon McWhinney, a volunteer dentist at the Community Health Free Clinic in Cedar Rapids (CHFC), told the news provider that due to the high number of patients who need care "there just isn't enough dentists and time to get the job done."
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, poor oral hygiene affects a person's overall health, including their ability to speak, taste, smile, swallow and chew.
Individuals can find affordable dental care services for themselves and their families to improve their oral hygiene.
