Programs promote better access to dental care for underprivileged communities

Programs promote better access to dental care for underprivileged communities People who live in underprivileged communities may have difficulty paying for dental care or finding ways to access treatment. In order to better serve these areas, some groups have created programs that specifically focus on the needs of these individuals.

The American Dental Association (ADA) created a program in which students from the University of Oklahoma became Community Dental Health Coordinator's (CDHC). The goal is to improve oral health among the underserved population.

To become CDHC's, the students completed internships, online course work and clinical training. These individuals will serve the communities in which they trained, which were mainly rural area. This helps to eliminate cultural or language barriers between patients and oral care providers.

The CDHC's will provide preventative services, dental education and patient assistance to communities where oral healthcare is inadequate. These students will also assist dentists in administering screenings, fluoride treatments, sealants and cleanings to patients.

Raymond F. Gist, president of the ADA, said that this community-based approach can raise awareness about "the importance of good oral hygiene habits."

People who have difficulty paying for dental care, or those who lack insurance, can find low-cost treatment. Discount dental plans provide affordable coverage for individuals and their families.
