Adults in Maine receive free oral care treatments

Adults in Maine receive free oral care treatments Individuals may sometimes neglect to take precautions to improve their dental health. Advanced gum disease can destroy a person's gums and bones as well as cause their teeth to fall out, and according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, up to 12 percent of U.S. adults have this problem.

To help prevent oral diseases, some dentists and hygienists in Maine are volunteering their time to help provide easier access to care for adults. More than 25 professionals from the Greater Portland Dental Society will soon be holding their second annual event, called Dentists Who Care for ME, to offer free treatments for one day, the Portland Press Herald Reports.

Adults who do not have insurance, as well as those who cannot afford care, will receive services such as cleanings, extractions or fillings. Some patients will be referred to oral surgeons who will also be providing free treatments, according to the newspaper.

The services will be administered on a first-come first-serve basis and patients will receive complimentary toothbrushes and toothpaste. Last year, about 600 people were treated, the news provider reports.

Rather than wait in line to receive oral care, there are affordable ways in which individuals can seek coverage. Discount dental plans provide affordable plans for people and their families.
