Oral care access increases for underprivileged families

Oral care access increases for underprivileged families Approximately two thirds of children between the ages of 12 and 19who are from low-income families have had tooth decay at some point during their lives, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In order to help curb this problem, some organizations are receiving grants to expand services for the underserved population.

For example, two dental organizations in Champaign County, Illinois will receive grants that are being awarded by the Illinois Children's Healthcare Foundation to increase access to dental care, The News-Gazette reports. Overall, organizations in the state will be awarded $2.4 million for dental programs.

Of the two Champaign County organizations, the Frances Nelson Health Center is set to receive $320,500. The money will go toward the remodeling of a dental clinic that will specifically service low-income families.

The other program, SmileHealthy, will receive $34,000 to help children receive treatments that require anesthesia at a hospital.

Families who lack insurance can find low-cost ways of receiving oral treatment. Discount dental plans provide affordable coverage for adults and children.
