Health risks that are associated with oral problems such as gum disease or tooth decay, can be prevented by having good dental habits, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). This involves individuals properly brushing and flossing their teeth on a daily basis.
Some organizations are creating awareness about how to maintain excellent oral health. For example, the American Dental Hygienists' Association (ADHA) has named October National Dental Hygiene Month and is teaming up with GlaxoSmithKline to educate people about preventative dental care.
Caryn Solie, president of ADHA, said that "possibly the easiest and most effective technique for preventing some oral diseases is brushing for two minutes, a minimum of twice a day." She said that this could significantly reduce plaque build-up as well as eliminate the risk of developing gingivitis or cavities.
The CDC reports that along with daily tooth brushing, regular dental checkups can also prevent potential health problems.
Individuals who are seeking low-cost care can find affordable coverage for themselves and their families through discount dental plans.
