Students and faculty provide kids with oral care
Updated: 10/14/2010 3:00:20 PM

Students and faculty provide kids with oral care In order for children to have proper preventative dental health, they should brush their teeth twice each day, eat healthy foods and receive regular dental exams, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Some institutions are providing free checkups to improve young kids' oral health. The Superior Telegram reports that dental hygienist students and faculty from Chippewa Valley Technical College recently offered their services to about 30 members of the Boys and Girl Club of the Greater Chippewa Valley (GCV) area.

The dental students checked for cavities and gum disease among the children and then notified the parents if any potential problems were found.

Sarah Antonson, executive director of the Boys and Girls Club of GCV, told the news provider that this event is about "giving [the children] opportunities that they might not have." She added that some of the kids do not visit the dentists very often, while others who were being treated may be seeing a dentist the first time.

There are ways in which parents can seek low-cost care for their children. Discount dental plans provide affordable coverage for kids and the rest of their families.
