In lieu of the popular candy-eating season - Halloween - some organizations are creating awareness among parents which may help their children decrease the risk for dental problems, such as cavities.
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) is providing tips for parents, so that children can have fun, but also maintain the proper oral hygiene.
The AAPD suggests to mix healthy snacks with kids' Halloween candy, so that a balanced diet is provided. This includes vegetables, grains or yogurt. Children should also avoid eating chewy treats that can cause damage by sticking to their teeth.
Parents could buy their kids seasonal toothbrushes, such as those with a Halloween theme, so that children will get excited about brushing their teeth. According to the AAPD, scheduling a dental appointment around this time is also extra important.
John R. Liu, president of AAPD, said that "the key is to continue doing everything in moderation so that a health Halloween celebration can be enjoyed by all."
Parents who need to provide their children with dental care can find low-cost and affordable coverage through discount dental plans.
