A study conducted by the United Way and the Nevada Community Foundation reports that the state of Nevada ranks first in the country for the number of third graders who have tooth decay, which is more than 67 percent. The results also show that 42 percent of these children have not visited the dentist in the past year, while 11 percent have never had an appointment to receive oral care.
Due to this problem, programs are providing free dental services for kids in the area.
Communities in Schools, of Southern Nevada, will be taking donations from individuals, organization or businesses to help young students who need to improve their oral health. A wide variety of items are being collected, such as dental floss, toothpaste and toothbrushes.
Louise Helton, state official, said that if children can learn to have good dental habits then "they can avoid many of the pitfalls that poor dental hygiene leads to including cavities, premature gum disease and having their teeth pulled at an early age."
Families could help in the prevention of childhood dental problems by seeking low-cost care. Discount dental plans offer affordable plans for these individuals.
