Nearly one out of every three individuals in the U.S. lacks dental insurance, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Some practices are campaigning to find more volunteer dentists to provide services for these people.
For instance, The Detroit Free Press reports that a dentist in Oakland County, Michigan along with the Michigan Dental Association are teaming up to start a media campaign that will hopefully increase the number of volunteers who will treat patients that do not have insurance.
Free services are already provided by Steve Wolf and 17 other volunteer dentists, which aim to treat individuals who have developmental disabilities and need better dental care.
However, he told the news source that the program will need many dentists who are willing to donate their time so that thousands who need treatment can be seen.
There may be other areas throughout the country where there are not enough free services for special needs individuals or those without insurance. This could leave an increased amount of people who are in need of affordable oral care. Discount dental plans provide low-cost coverage for them and their families.
