The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that nearly 25 percent of adults aged 65 and older have lost all of their teeth. This could occur as a result of untreated cavities or gum disease. Now, dentists are urging individuals to make sure they are treated quickly as it could prevent future oral health problems.
Julie Satur, a professor at Melbourne University, told the Maroondah Leader, that new technology allows dentists to fix lesions on the teeth, and that this problem tends to go untreated. As a result, she said that an increased amount of individuals tend to end up in the hospital, although it could have been prevented.
The newspaper reports that individuals who come from low-income families are also affected. One example is at the Ringwood Community Dental Clinic, where there are only three chairs for dentists to provide services for these individuals. Lisa Arton, the co-coordinator at the clinic, told the news source that more equipment could result in a higher number of patients being treated, which may ultimately lead to saving money in the long run.
Individuals who have untreated oral problems, such as teeth lesions, may be seeking ways to receive low-cost care. Discount dental plans offer affordable plans for them and their families.
