Approximately two thirds of children who come from low-income families in the U.S. and are between the ages of 12 and 19 have tooth decay, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Some areas are creating more facilities to help provide dental services for these individuals.
The Hillsdale Collegian reports that the Hillsdale Department of Health and Michigan Community Dental Clinics, Inc. (MCDC) will build a new dental clinic that will provide low-cost services, at the start of next year in Hillsdale, Michigan. Individuals who do not have insurance or those who can't afford care will receive treatment.
According to the news source, both adults and children will be eligible for the care. For the first few months, there will be no charge for services, and then individuals will pay on a sliding scale as the cost of treatment will be adjusted to their income.
Thomas J. Veryser, chief executive officer of MCDC, told the news source that there is an increased amount of individuals in the area who needs emergency dental care from clinics. This is due in part to recent state budget cuts which as left many without medicaid.
Low-income individuals who are uninsured could seek affordable oral care for themselves and their families through discount dental plans.
