Students enrolled in dental programs educate children about oral health Students who are enrolled in the Virginia Commonwealth (VC) School of Dentistry program recently visited a first grade classroom at the Wise Primary school, reports.

The college students taught young children how to properly brush their teeth as well as what food to eat so that cavities can be avoided in the future. The first-graders also learned why wearing a mouth guard during sports is important for protecting their teeth.

According to the news source, the trip is an annual visit that VC students make in order to decrease the number of individuals who need care each year. The goal is that the number of children who seek free treatment each summer at the Wise County Fairgrounds will be reduced.

The program is provided for young children in order to inspire better oral hygiene. Improved dental health could reduce the need for free dental clinics in the future.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly half of all children aged 12 to 19 have tooth decay. Individuals who need affordable care for themselves and their families can find low-cost coverage through discount dental plans.
