Oral health experts say that the dental hygiene habits children develop in their younger years tend to follow them throughout adulthood, making it important for parents to teach their children good practices. However, many kids from low-income families lack the resources that are necessary for maintaining good dental health.
In an effort to make dental hygiene products more available to less fortunate families in Iowa, The Greater Des Moines Partnership recently donated 900 toothbrushes, toothpaste and floss to children in the Iowa Head Start program, according to the Cresco Times.
"As leaders in the community, we value the importance of supporting and improving the oral health of Head Start children at a critical time in their development," Martha Willits, president of the partnership, told the news source.
Programs like this may be important for families that cannot afford dental insurance. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that 22 percent of children under the age of 18 have some degree of untreated tooth decay. These problems can be extremely painful and may require expensive treatments to fix. However, prevention may help children avoid these issues.
