Most dental experts say that early childhood is a critical time period for kids to learn effective dental health habits that could help them avoid a lifetime of problems. However, many children are not covered by dental insurance, making it difficult for them to visit a dentist for preventative treatments.
In an effort to help these children build strong dental health, Community Health Systems recently partnered with the school district of Beloit, Wisconsin to provide free dental care to the county's youths, according to the Beloit Daily News.
Schools that have a high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-cost lunches will benefit most from the program. Volunteer dental hygienists will visit local schools, providing screenings, sealants and fluoride treatments.
"There are a lot of children out there who do not have a dental home," Lakisha Aris-Holmes, a dentist with Community Health Systems, told the news source. "It will help."
She added that children's dental health is often overlooked by their parents. In fact, 25 percent of children between the ages of 6 and 11 have some degree of untreated tooth decay, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
