Dental health is a serious problem for America's youths. Nearly 20 percent of children under age 20 have untreated tooth decay, and the problem is only getting worse, according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
In an effort to curb the rates of dental caries in the Savanna, Georgia area, Springfield Elementary School officials recently announced that they would begin providing basic dental services to all uninsured and underinsured students in the school, according to the Morning News.
Students will be able to receive checkups, cleanings, fluoride treatments and sealants to prevent further tooth decay.
"Sealants are an excellent way to protect against cavities," Harry Hickson, a dentist involved in the program, told the news source. "This program will allow us to provide sealants to children who otherwise have no way to get them."
In addition to pursuing free services like these, parents who lack dental insurance for their family may benefit from signing up for discount dental plans. These services may lower the cost of visiting a dentist.
