Those who lack dental insurance may face many problems. Allowing cavities to go untreated can compound the problem, resulting in painful abscesses. Additionally, dental health problems like gum disease have been tied to chronic illnesses such as heart disease and diabetes.
However, uninsured residents in Charles County, Maryland now have more options for seeking treatment of their oral health problems. Health Partners, a volunteer clinic that offers free services to individuals who lack dental insurance, was recently awarded a $120,000 grant from the Maryland Community Health Resources Commission, according to the Maryland Independent.
The funding will help the clinic hire a part-time dental hygienist and an administrator, which will allow dentists to focus more on patient care and less on clerical tasks.
Christine Mulcahey, executive director of Health Partners, told the news source that she hopes the grant will also allow the group to continue a program in which volunteer dentists go to local elementary schools to provide checkups and some services.
In addition to free services like this, individuals who lack dental insurance may benefit from discount dental plans. These programs may allow them to visit a dentist on a regular basis at less cost.
