Several recent studies have tied dental health problems like gum disease to other serious health problems. Individuals who rarely visit a dentist may have a higher risk of chronic illnesses like heart disease, diabetes and arthritis.
In an effort to raise awareness about this situation, Charles Martin, a Virginia-based dentist, recently wrote a book about the various ways that oral hygiene impacts overall health.
He said that oral health is constantly overlooked, despite the fact that it plays such a central role in maintaining a healthy heart and body weight.
"The majority of Americans have gum disease and don't even know it if they aren't receiving regular dental checkups," Martin said. "It is a serious warning sign that things aren't right elsewhere in the body, but it's a sign most people don't even know to look for. We need to change that."
Individuals who do not have dental insurance and cannot afford to pay for visits to the dentist out-of-pocket may benefit from purchasing a discount dental plan. This may lower the cost of checkups at a rate that is affordable.
