According to Tufts University School of Medicine, there are some dental concerns that may be misunderstood by the general public. In an effort to inform people about some things they should and should not be concerned with, the school recently published a report that explains some of these myths.
One questionable piece of dental information that people may not be aware of is that proper dental care doesn't just protect the teeth and gums. Studies have shown that it also plays a role in several severe health complications. In fact, gum inflammation and tooth decay can lead to the development of memory problems, obesity and cardiovascular complications.
Another myth parents may have heard is that it's okay if a child loses their baby teeth earlier than expected due to tooth decay. If this occurs, young children's adult teeth may be more susceptible to damage and may need orthodontic work later in life.
A third misunderstanding is that tooth decay is only a dental problem that affects young people. In actuality, this problem can develop in any person who doesn't practice proper dental care. Older people who have receding gum lines and tooth decay, can be more susceptible to permanent root damage and diabetes.
