In order to improve the availability of affordable dental care in Maine's underserved counties, the Farmington-based Community Dental has been approved to receive $450,000 in funding. This grant will help the nonprofit dental organization purchase equipment and add onto their current facility, according to The Sun Journal.
Community Dental has already opened five centers, which provide services for both pediatric and adult patients. Additional fees may be included depending on the individual's dental insurance coverage.
Officials from the Farmington clinic said that approximately 60 percent of current patients are 21 years old or younger, the news source reports. This is also a growing problem on a national level as 77 percent of Americans aged 2 to 17 years saw a dentist in 2007, according to the the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Senator Susan Collins, member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, stated that "too many Mainers today lack access to dental care, particularly in rural areas that face a serious shortage of dentists."
In addition to the expansion of several dental clinics, people with little or no dental insurance can benefit from signing up for a discount dental plan. These programs help patients see a dentist on a regular basis and receive services that may not be offered at community-based centers.
