Growing number of emergency room visits linked to dental problems
Updated: 7/19/2010 6:59:59 PM

Growing number of emergency room visits linked to dental problems Healthcare officials from across the country have discovered that a lack of dental care has led to an increase in emergency room (ER) visits. Many believe that the cause is linked to a lack of dental insurance benefits, leaving a substantial population unable to afford expensive treatments.

St. John's Hospital in Missouri and the Health Commission of Springfield and Green County have reported that there is a growing number of ER patients seeking treatments for dental-related pain and infection.

Staff at the hospital have found that approximately 7 percent of visits to the ER are related to poor oral hygiene, according to KY3.com. This includes a total of 37 percent of these patients who don't have any health insurance.

This epidemic is also increasing on a national level, as approximately 27 percent of Americans aged 20 to 64 years suffer from untreated dental complications, the most out of any age group, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

While hospital visits can help those who are in need of immediate dental care, finding a dental discount plan can provide more benefits to those with little or no dental insurance. These programs allow patients to see a dentist on a regular basis, and receive treatments ranging from preventative services to extensive dental procedures.
