New dental clinic, free services may benefit low-income families

New dental clinic, free services may benefit low-income families The United Way of Champaign County has announced that a community-based organization has raised approximately $300,000 to help pay for the construction of a new dental care clinic. The new center is slated to open in spring 2011, according to The News Gazette.

The clinic will benefit families and individuals who have little or no dental insurance coverage and are in need of services at an affordable cost.

By building new clinics, dental care organizations are making efforts to provide more people in the U.S. with a chance to see a dentists on a regular basis. In 2007, only 63 percent of people aged 18 to 64 years saw a dentist, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports.

In an effort to provide free treatments to low-income families and individuals while the clinic is being built, the SmileHealthy mobile dental center will visit the area twice per month. About 200 children and 400 individuals have already signed up to receive services, the news source reports.

In addition to providing preventative dental treatments, SmileHealthy volunteers will also provide patients with nutritional advice and counsel them on how to maintain proper oral hygiene.

While free dental care centers provide affordable services, low-income families can benefit from researching discount dental plans. By taking advantage of these programs, patients can visit a dentist on a regular basis and receive more services than those offered at clinics.
