Illinois dentists launch free oral hygiene event
Updated: 6/7/2010 7:00:08 PM

Illinois dentists launch free oral hygiene event To improve the availability of dental care to low-income families who reside in Illinois, a team of five dentists will help provide treatment during the Dentistry from the Heart program on June 18 in Springfield.

The dentists and a total of 30 volunteers will offer free services including free teeth cleanings, fillings and teeth extractions to adults aged 18 years and older, according to the Chicago Tribune. Volunteers will include local dental hygienists, dental assistants and students from the Midwest Technical Institute.

Matt VanderMolen, lead dentist and organizer of this program, told the news source that "it's difficult to serve large numbers of dental patients in a limited time period." He added that "unlike medical checkups, which a doctor can conduct in 10 or 15 minutes and end with a prescription, dental visits typically take a half-hour to an hour and involve the equivalent of surgical procedures."

While free events like this can help people with little or no dental insurance coverage receive immediate treatment, there are also discount dental plans that can better assist these individuals.
