The dangers of using tobacco are generally well known. Use of tobacco products can lead to heart and lung problems, as well as affect the way the body's metabolism works. However, many people don't realize that tobacco products can also have damaging effects on dental health.
The use of tobacco, whether it is smoked or chewed, can lead to yellow teeth, bad breath, gum disease and more serious conditions like mouth and throat cancer, according to the World Health Organization.
In order to educate the public about these dangers, the organization will hold a World No Tobacco Day on May 31. Dentists around the world will use the day to inform the public about the many ways tobacco use can damage dental health.
Philadelphia dentist, Dr David DiGiallorenzo, who will be participating in the education day, said that more events like this are needed to make more people aware of the range of dental health problems caused by tobacco.
"Its no secret that tobacco use can lead to significant health issues, but I dont think that enough people have been educated on the fact that tobacco use can lead to some very serious oral health issues, specifically," he said.
