States save dental health clinics
Updated: 5/24/2010 3:00:22 PM

States save dental health clinics Free and low-cost dental clinics are an important resource for individuals without dental insurance, and many states are initiating efforts to provide them with funding that will allow them to continue and expand their operation.

For example, Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty recently signed a new law that will continue the funding of several dental clinics in the state that serve physically and mentally disabled individuals.

Bruce Templeton, president of the Minnesota Dental Association, told the Fergus Falls Journal that the funding would enable the clinics to continue their care of these individuals who would have difficulty finding treatment anywhere else.

"These individuals are the most medically complicated and behaviorally challenging to treat, and cannot receive care in just any dental office," he told the news source. "Closing clinics would, in effect, mean abandoning these vulnerable patients with no other options for treatment."

Some other states, including Virginia, have turned to the federal government for funding to keep similar dental clinics open.
