Most experts agree that children who do not learn proper dental hygiene at a young age generally struggle with maintaining proper dental health throughout their lives. This can lead to a number of serious dental problems that can affect an individual's overall health.
A new program in Seattle is using new technology to try to teach younger children the importance of maintaining good hygiene. An interactive 3-D game at the Pacific Science Center challenges children to go on an adventure battling tooth decay.
The game may be fun, but its creator, Jacqueline Pickerell from the University of Washington, told local news television station KING, that teaching children about dental health is the real goal of the project.
"Dental health is the number one reason children in this country miss school," she told the news source. "If somehow they could see and feel for themselves the impact that brushing their teeth with fluoride toothpaste makes, that would intrinsically motivate them to do it themselves."
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention says that 22.9 percent of children between the ages of 6 and 19 have some form of untreated dental decay.
