Many government health agencies are working to make sure that children get the dental care they need to grow up with a healthy mouth by bringing the dentist office to their school.
California's Healthy Families program recently had a dental care van make stops at local schools to provide examinations for children without dental insurance, treatments and other services.
Program coordinator, Wendy Gattoni, told the Lake County Record-Bee that the difficult economic times are making it even harder for many children to get the dental care they need, and that school-based programs like this are very important to help these children.
"With the economy many employers are cutting back on benefits, especially dental coverage," she told the news source. "This leaves many children with untreated dental decay. About 95 percent of the children who were seen had no insurance."
While programs like this help children get care for immediate needs, there are many discount dental plans that families can look into to provide regular checkups.
Among children between the ages of 6 and 19, 22.9, percent have some form of untreated dental decay, according to government statistics.
