Experts say that education can be one of the most effective tools for preventing dental health problems, especially in children, but a new survey suggests that kids aren't getting enough of the information they need from their parents.
The GlaxoSmithKline survey showed that mothers tend to use a "one-size-fits-all" approach to teaching their children dental hygiene, which does not always incorporate the best information.
Colin MacKenzie, a spokesperson for the company, said that treating the dental health problems of each family member the same way does not produce the best health outcomes.
"The new study confirms that families look to mom to know which oral health care products are best for them," he said. "We wanted to arm them with information needed to make informed decisions for their family's oral health care regimens."
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention says that 47 percent of American adults between 18 and 64 years old did not see a dentist in the past year.
