Most dentists say that the most effective way to treat dental health problems is simply to avoid them in the first place, and a new dental clinic in Palo Alto, California is focusing on this message while providing care to low-income families.
The center will focus especially on treating children, while educating them about proper dental hygiene and the best food choices for avoiding dental problems.
The clinic's Lisa Buada told Palo Alto Online that a recent trip to an area elementary school showed that 32 percent of kindergarten and second grade children had visible cavities, and that most of these children were not seeing a dentist for treatment.
The new clinic is one of the only options in the area for families who need dental care, but do not have dental insurance.
"Our patients have significant dental health problems," Buada told the news source.
In addition to clinics such as this, there are many low-cost insurance plans available to help individuals see dentists.
