Most people are aware of the cosmetic impacts smoking has on their teeth, like bad breath and discoloration, but fewer people think about the more serious effects smoking has on their dental health, which, experts warn, can have major consequences.
Dental health professionals say smoking can lead to an array of problems, most of which occur in the gums.
Dr Robert MacGregor told the Vancouver Sun that smoking can make gums soft, cause painful sores, and weaken the mouth's defenses against other problems.
"Tooth discoloration and bad breath are two of the better known side-effects of smoking," he told the news source. "But smokers need to be aware that they're also contending with gum disease, periodontal disease, loss of jawbone density, loss of teeth, land oral cancer as well."
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that there are over 30,000 new cases of oral cancer each year, resulting in 8,000 deaths.
