Dentists across the country agree that teaching children proper dental health habits early on plays a major role in their future oral health of their, and a group of high school in North Carolina are working to make sure children get the information they need.
The Gaston Gazette reported that students in the technical high school's dental sciences track came up with a program aimed at teaching 3- and 4-year-old students how to property take care of their teeth. The project taught children the importance of each step of the process, from choosing healthy foods to proper brushing technique.
Sophomore Olivia Allen told the news source that she and her classmates came up with the project when it occurred to them that they had all the tools available to make a difference.
We came up with the idea to have different stations and teach them how to brush their teeth and why, she said. We had the tools. Then we just had to make it into a project.
The team will present the results of their project at a national competition in Orlando, Florida in June, put on by Health Occupations Students of America.
