Just about every business these days has at least thought about going green, and the trend is even catching on among family dentists.
Many green dentists are using x-ray machines that reduce radiation exposure by as much as 90 percent. Other green features being incorporated include reusable patient bibs, biodegradable disinfectants, and energy efficient light fixtures.
Susan Beck of the Eco Dentistry Association (EDA) said that the trend has taken off as environmentally friendly technologies have become more available, and as more patients have demanded it.
"[The] eco-friendly practice is a rapidly expanding focus among dentists," she said. "A recent survey of dentists showed that 25 percent of dental offices have taken steps to go green, while 80 percent of American consumers say when given the choice, they prefer an environmentally friendly service provider."
The EDA says that, despite the common belief that going green can be an expensive, extra cost for dentists, it can actually help practices save money in the long run.
