The overall health benefits of the antioxidants in green tea have gotten a lot attention lately, but drink's beneficial impact on dental health has been overlooked.
A new study published in the journal Preventative Medicine found that green tea has a type of antimicrobial molecule called catechins that may promote dental health.
The study found that men who drank at least one cup of green tea a day were 19 percent less likely to have fewer than 20 teeth (a full set is 32).
Editor of the journal, Alfredo Morabia, wrote an editorial accompanying the study, which said the benefits of the antimicrobial could be significant, but only if tea drinkers don't sweeten their drink.
"Green tea may have bacteriocidal effects, which would affect teeth, but only if you drink it without sugar," he wrote.
Green tea has also been linked to reduced risks of diabetes, heart disease and cancer, according to other research.
