In an effort to provide quality dental care to kids in need, the Colorado Department of Public Health and Education (CDPHE) has partnered with the nonprofit Kids in Need of Dentistry to initiate a campaign to put sealants on local schoolchildren's molars.
The initiative, known as the Chopper Topper Program, is one of many state-sponsored projects that provide much-needed dental services to low-income children, according to the Denver Times. However, Theresa Anselmo, director of the CDPHE's Oral Health Unit, said that the program did not have enough funding to assist children at every school in Colorado.
While 398 schools are eligible for the sealant program, only 99 schools participated and less than 7,000 students received free dental care.
"We have made a concerted effort to prioritize children's health," says Anselmo. "We need to be proud of ourselves but not rest on our laurels. This is just the beginning."
Childhood tooth decay is the single most common chronic childhood disease. Visiting a dentist can help prevent or reduce the incidence of decay through preventative and restorative care.
