As part of the national Give Kids a Smile program, Minnesota volunteer dentists and their staffs provided free dental care services to more than 6,000 underprivileged children during the month of February.
In total, more than 3,000 dental professionals donated their time and money to give back to local members of the Minnesota community. Since its inception eight years ago, the Great Lake State's dental health initiative has donated almost $11 million worth of services and has served more than 38,000 children in need.
"Minnesota dentists are proud to help close the gap for thousands of low income children who are not getting the dental care they need and deserve with all the government budget cuts," said Dr Robert Templeton, president of the Minnesota Dental Association. "But the public needs to know that charity care is no solution."
The MDA reports that, on average, each Minnesota dentist donates approximately $18,000 worth of dental services each year to families facing economic hardships.
Families with limited access to complementary dental care may want to invest in a discount dental plan, which can save between 10 and 60 percent on most procedures.
