On February 27, faculty and students from Idaho State University's dental hygiene and dental residency programs volunteered their services for the annual Give Kids a Smile Day, a national event aimed at providing dental care to underprivileged children.
Working alongside local dental hygienists and assistants, members of the ISU dental community provided cleanings, fluoride treatments, sealants and home care instructions to approximately 150 children, according to the Idaho State Journal.
Current and prospective dental professionals also helped educate the kids on how to care for their own teeth something that many of the children had not done well enough.
"You practiced on these ones and you made some mistakes," said one of the dentists told a young patient, according to the news source. "But now we have our real teeth and now we know what not to do and we can really work on brushing and flossing."
Kids who come from families without dental insurance are 2.5 times less likely to receive dental care than are children who are insured.
Families who are looking to save money on dental care may want to look into discount dental plans, which can save 10 to 60 percent on most dental procedures.
