On Tuesday, approximately 200 Virginia residents rallied at the state capital to implore lawmakers to approve a budget that would maintain funding for dental care.
Members representing the Virginians Organized for Interfaith Community Engagement organization lobbied for the General Assembly to adopt the State Senate's version of dental care provisions, rather than those proposed by the House, according to The Washington Post.
The organization has said that the main cuts to state-sponsored dental health programs would adversely affect local health centers and free clinics.
In addition to advocating for the General Assembly to maintain the current budget, community organizers also pleaded that lawmakers begin taking advantage of federal grants that are available through the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program, according to InsideNova.com.
"Virginia should not leave federal money on the table," said Reverend Keith Savage, senior pastor at First Baptist Church in Manassas.
Meanwhile, a national report recently gave the Old Dominion State a C grade for its policies regarding children's dental care. Virginia is one of a few states in the country where the only dental care Medicaid covers is emergency care.
