Earlier this week, Iowa was recognized by the Pew Center on the States' annual report as the nation's leader in addressing the dental care needs of its children.
The Hawkeye State received an A grade for exceeding six of the eight national benchmarks for dental health policy, including providing fluoridated water to 90 percent of its population. Moreover, Iowa's Medicaid program was found to be one of the best in the country, according to Medical News Today.
"Providing quality dental care is our top priority and by no means should we abandon our efforts for better public policy because of one grade on one report," said Dr Steven Bradley, president of the Iowa Dental Association. "There is more work to be done."
Bradley added that children in Iowa should not have to rely so heavily on charity for their dental care needs, and that the state's lawmakers need to continue to expand dental coverage for children.
Meanwhile, the report also noted that 36 U.S. states were given a C grade or lower.
Families in need of dental coverage may want to invest in a discount dental plan, which can save as much as 60 percent on most procedures.
