On February 5, as part of the Give Kids a Smile dental access program, members of New Richmond Dental in New Richmond, Wisconsin, donated more than $2,000 in free dental care to local children in need.
On a statewide level, nearly 350 dentists and 950 dental team members, including hygienists, assisting students and faculty, volunteered their time to contribute more than $719,000 in oral care and education to approximately 6,000 children, according to the New Richmond News.
"Give Kids a Smile events help get thousands of Wisconsin's children out of dental pain and infection, while continuing to raise awareness of the need to increase access to dental care for our states low-income residents," said Ryan Tietz of New Richmond Dental.
"We must all - dentists, lawmakers, patients and oral health advocates - work together toward long-term, viable solutions to this health crisis," he added.
Currently, tooth decay is the single most common chronic childhood disease. Nearly 80 percent of tooth decay is found in just 25 percent of children, the majority of whom are in low-income families, according to the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research.
