Iowa school provides free dental care to local children
Updated: 2/15/2010 5:00:22 PM

Iowa school provides free dental care to local children On February 6, as part of the national Give Kids a Smile program, 12 Iowa Central Community College dental hygiene students and two local dentists provided free dental care services to underprivileged children.

Dentists John Clay, Larry Swenson and a dozen local students donated over $2,500 worth of care to 16 area children who did not have dental insurance, according to The Messenger.

"This was our biggest year yet with the number of kids we were able to serve," said Renee Piper, Iowa Central dental hygiene program coordinator. "The only requirement is that they don't have a dental home."

During the event, second year dental students assisted the dentists during their exams, cleanings and fillings. First year students sterilized the instruments and conducted oral health education tutorials for the parents.

Each child participating in the event was given a new toothbrush and a prize provided by the free clinic's sponsors, including Walmart, Henry Schine Dental and Hy-Vee.

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that children be examined by a dentist within six months of the eruption of the first tooth and no later than age 1.
