Earlier this week, the 42nd Aeromedical-Dental Operations Squadron paid a visit to Maxwell Elementary School to help students understand the importance of preventative dental care.
After relaying her message to the children, Dr Paula Morse, a dentist and captain of the squadron, expressed to parents how important it is to be an active part of their children's dental health, according to the Maxwell Gunter Dispatch.
Morse told parents to monitor their children's regular brushing until they are of an age when they can take care of themselves.
"Most kids cannot do this on their own until about 7-8 years of age," said Morse. "Kids can brush on their own at 6, but parents still need to check the teeth after the child has brushed and re-brush the kid's teeth if necessary."
The captain also advised parents to not share their own dental fears with kids, and to cultivate a positive outlook on visits to the dentist.
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that children be examined by a dentist within six months of the eruption of the first tooth and no later than age 1.
