Patients of Amherst Pediatric Dental Associates in New Hampshire are currently being offered an opportunity to participate in a dental health study to validate a new non-genetic saliva assessment, known as the CARE Test, which may be able to forecast which people are at the greatest risk of developing cavities and tooth decay.
The simple test compares sugar chain traits found in saliva with documented standards for young adults, according to The Cabinet. If validated, the test will help dentists project the number of cavities each patient should expect and in which grouping they will be located.
Each child under the age of 18 participating in the study will receive a $15 Toys R Us gift card.
"For spitting that's pretty awesome, getting money for something kids normally get in trouble for," said Amherst Pediatric dentist Andrew Cheifetz, quoted by the news source.
Adults who choose to contribute to the research study will receive $25 gift cards to local businesses.
Childhood tooth decay is the single most common chronic childhood disease. However, a dentist can help prevent or reduce the incidence of decay by applying sealants to children's teeth.
