Study: Fish oil may help ward off dental disease
Updated: 2/9/2010 7:00:08 PM

Fish oil may help ward off dental disease A recent study published in the journal Nutrition has found that consuming fish oil may help support dental health and prevent mouth infections and other dental diseases.

The five-year Japanese research study revealed that an insufficient intake of essential omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oil had strong links to the progression of gum disease. Researchers also discovered that the nutrient was effective in preventing a range of oral bacteria, according to the Driffield Post.

"These findings illustrate how the consequences of our diet can be linked to gum disease, the most common dental hygiene issue," said Nigel Carter, chief executive of the British Dental Health Foundation, quoted by the news source.

"There are hundreds of bacteria in our mouths at any one time that contribute to gum disease, which not only threatens tooth loss but, significantly, overall health," he added.

The consumption of fish oil has also been linked to health benefits concerning the heart and kidney.

Regular visits to the dentist can help prevent avoidable dental health problems, such as infection, tooth decay and cardiovascular disease, according to the American Dental Association.
