The Summa Center for Dental Health in Akron, Ohio has recently received $140,000 in funding, which will allow the hospital-based dental clinic to continue serving underprivileged people in the local community.
Since opening in July 2007, the center has treated over 8,000 patients who may not have otherwise received dental care. Approximately 40 percent of the patients treated at the facility are uninsured and receive care based on a sliding income scale, according to the Akron Beacon Journal. Another 52 percent are covered by Medicaid.
"These patients do not utilize routine dental care at all," said Marvin Cohen, director of Summa's dental residency program, quoted by the news source. "So we see tremendous unmet needs when we examine them...we're making a significant impact."
Supervised residents working at the center also provide dental care in the hospital's operating room to patients with cerebral palsy, mental retardation and other conditions.
Recent funding for the facility was contributed by the Ohio Department of Health, the Akron Community Foundation and the Akron Dental Society.
