Dental care to be offered in Vermont classroom
A federal grant secured by Vermont's Independent Senator Bernard Sanders will be used to covert a classroom into a two-chair dental office and provide dental care to students within the Rutland school district.

The $125,000 grant will allow the Community Health Centers of the Rutland Region (CHC) to offer dental exams, cleanings and cavity fillings to all students, the Rutland Herald reports.

Dental care will be paid for through Medicaid, the state's low-income health plan for children called Dr Dynasaur and by the students' families on a sliding scale.

"What this means essentially is that all the kids in the school district will now be able to walk into a dentist's office regardless of their income," Sanders told the news source.

He added that the new arrangement allows students to receive dental care without missing school and without their parents missing work.

According to the CHC, the new dental office will open in Rutland Intermediate School by the start of the next school year and will not turn away a single student.

In the meantime, discount dental plans can help low-income families save money on dental care for health conditions which can worsen over time if not treated.
