Today, many families are without dental care coverage, meaning children all over the country could be developing oral health issues.
On February 5, the New Jersey Dental Association will host the national Give Kids a Smile (GKAS) Children's Dental Access Day, according to NJToday.net. Thousands of children under the age of 12 will be eligible to receive free dental care so long as they visit participating locations.
"We are looking forward to a breakout year with GKAS in 2010," pediatric dentist Dr Cavan Brunsden told the news source. "I'm so proud to be a part of a profession that takes its responsibility to the healthcare of children seriously and takes measures to demonstrate this responsibility in a very public way."
The New York Times published an article in September that claims more than 100 million Americans are currently without dental coverage. Although free dental care days such as GKAS can be helpful for families who currently don't have coverage, they can't replace regular visits to the dentist as they often occur too infrequently to provide children with adequate care.
The Mayo Clinic says individuals should brush, floss and visit the dentist regularly to maintain good dental health.
