Scrimping on dental care can be a total pain. While a family or person's decision to forego dental insurance may be personal, the problem is not isolated to scattered individuals, according to surveys.
The Kaiser Family Foundation recently determined that 37 percent of adults in Missouri have not visited a dentist in the last year - a figure which ranks the state 47th in the country.
On a national level, about three out of five adults with low incomes and two out of five with higher earnings have no dental insurance coverage, StlToday.com reports.
While many citizens in Missouri, and other areas which feature low access to dental care, opt to hold out for occasional admittance to free clinics, their decision to eschew dental insurance tends to come with its share of additional problems.
For example, walk-ins to Missouri College's free dental hygiene clinic who need cavity fillings can be referred to local dentists. However, as Dr Hubert Benitez, director of the program, told the news source, "It's very difficult to get dentists to take non-paying patients."
According to the Mayo Clinic, untreated cavities can cause severe toothaches, infections or tooth loss.
