Modern dental care continues to evolve, as is made apparent by the introduction of platelet-rich plasma therapy (PRP).
According to the Journal of Oral Implantology, PRP could help accelerate the healing process for individuals who have received dental implants. At a recent meeting of the American Academy of Implant Dentistry, Dr James Rutkowski said PRP can help bone and tissue grow more quickly.
"For dental implant procedures, PRP treatments can jump-start bone growth and implant adherence in just two weeks, which cuts down the time between implant placement and affixing the permanent crown," said the dentist.
The plasma used in PRP is obtained by taking a small sample of the patient's blood and separating the platelets in order to use them for concentrated therapy.
The American Dental Association says dental implants can be more comfortable than conventional tooth substitutes because they fuse to the jawbone. Patients who are interested in undergoing such a procedure should know that healthy gums and adequate bone mass are necessary to support dental implants.
