Today, there are more than 108 million Americans who don't have dental care coverage, so one university has decided to offer its help.
The University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine will participate in a day of free dental services on December 10 at the Jubilee School in Philadelphia. The event will begin at 10:30 a.m. and last two hours, during which time 50 students will receive dental exams.
"Our students have a real need for these services," said Victoria Woodson-LaFair, the school's managing and development director. "This event will go a long way toward helping children and their families understand the importance of proper dental care."
The American Dental Association says brushing twice a day and visiting the dentist for teeth cleanings can help prevent tooth decay.
Although free dental care days can be a good temporary solution for families who don't have dental coverage, such events can't always provide the benefits that visiting the dentist regularly might. This is because free services are often offered on a first-come, first-served basis, meaning many attendees won't receive care.
