The state of Massachusetts is trying to save money and reducing coverage of dental care procedures is one way Governor Deval Patrick might accomplish this.
There are more than 1 million people who receive coverage from Medicaid, according to the Boston Globe. Medicaid is jointly financed by the state and federal governments and Massachusetts is trying to save $117 million on its own. About $15 million of the sum could be achieved by limiting the dental services covered by Medicaid to cleanings, X-rays and emergencies. Individuals who wear dentures, for example, would have to start paying for them out-of-pocket.
"I think the very design the governor put out to us was to ensure that necessary services remain intact and that we don't outright eliminate things," said Medicaid director Terence Dougherty to the news source. "That's about the only solace I can offer anybody."
Not everyone is eligible for Medicaid, according to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. There are certain income, age and ability requirements that individuals most pass in order to be covered by the program.
